Joining the Weavers’ Service Centre in Varanasi in 1961 was an important landmark in the early career of Prabhakar Barwe. Though trained at Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, Barwe had rejected his academic training and was looking for an individual vocabulary in abstractionism. The deep-rooted yet conspicuous abstractionism of Indian textiles provided a fillip to his developing personal vocabulary. This gouache work is one of the designs Barwe developed for the Weavers’ Service Centre, whose stamp it carries. The free-flowing linear shape attests to the artist’s ease in conjuring it to give expression to his thought-process.
