Along with G. R. Santosh, Biren De was one of the most prominent Indian painters to explore the philosophy of tantra in art in the 1970s. Not a direct expression of the tenets of tantra like Santosh’s work, De’s art was more focussed on internalising the self and achieving a state of oneness with the cosmos. He expressed this concept by ‘creating’ light on his canvases through clever juxtaposition of colours. In this work, the white strokes evoke rays of light illuminating a form below that resembles a lingam. Coupled with the lucidity of blue and yellow, it beckons the viewer to the highest level of meditation.
