This work presents itself as a cosmic puzzle, inhabited by floating, organic forms of earth or water. Does the work depict seaweeds, corals and aquatic life? Does it represent a pre-historic cave painting? Or does it show fossilised beings now one with rocks? For Ambadas, painting was an act of revelation or discovery, his method spontaneous—he was known to paint in a trance-like state. The journey of the viewer becomes similar. The work and its occupants cannot be reduced to a single nameable object, instead they come into being when under observation. The niraakar takes form out of space and colour. The work looks to the ’70s when the medium took over Ambadas’s work, presenting mysterious worlds in ‘unstructured terrains.
