As the conspicuous inscription on this work makes clear, this is a preparatory sketch by Altaf that he intended to develop into a painting. The subject of the work is the sun, as he shares in the inscription, and it shines brightly in this otherwise monochromatic work. As the only hope for a world suffering at the hands of monarchy—Altaf inscribes the same at the bottom of the work—it lords over the landscape that is a maze of confounding and labyrinthine geometrical diagrams, perhaps an allusion to disparities and injustices that monarchies introduced in the world.
