This is a highly intense and disturbing drawing. The dense strokes—almost like scratch marks on paper—mark an entry point into the life of the seated man and immediately thereafter, the viewer realises that the man is also chained. The artist’s masterstroke lies in the intensity of the sketch whereby he not only captures the gravity of the scene but also reveals his own disturbance on creating that scene. The thick bars on a window on the upper right side establish it to be a space for restraining people. The artist was highly sensitive to man’s atrocities on man, and this work reflects his distress.
