A month after Altaf’s passing in 2005, his wife Navjot and daughter Sasha discovered his journals that they had been unaware of. The journals are useful in helping to interpret the young Altaf. On the day this artwork was created, Altaf’s journals inform us that the artist had visited the highly-talked about Giacometti exhibition at the Tate, London. He noted the ‘face’ of Giacometti’s art, calling it curious, intellectual, absurd, and intriguing. Could that have had a bearing on the face that Altaf created in this work on the very same day?
