A casual view through Altaf’s early drawings yields surprises ever so often. In the midst of a series of graphite drawings of nondescript figures would suddenly appear a landscape; a series of monochrome drawings would immediately be followed by a colour saturated work. This Untitled oil pastel on paper is one such surprise. As it is undated, it is difficult to discern if the artist had a specific landscape in mind when he painted this work. It could, however, be his impression of the Scottish Highlands that he visited with his father, and the scenery of which left an impression on him.
