The trail of figures is less likely a nebulous queue or a group of people headed to a common destination, and more of a single figure drawn multiple times to show depth in the work. It could be interpreted as a figure walking away, from front to back, or a figure coming closer to the onlooker’s vision, from back to front. Whether it is a single figure or a group of people, the subject is definitely feminine.
