A sketch without a specific title or a specific date seems to be a deliberate device by an artist to leave open its interpretation by the onlookers as they may please. Or is it a deliberate cover to conceal what actually was going on in the mind of the artist when he must have thought of a drawing such as this? It would be difficult to answer any of these questions with any certainty with respect to this drawing by Altaf. The destitute, forbidding figure on the right seems to be an alter-ego, but whose—of the figure with its back to the onlooker or the one seated stoically on a high chair?
