As Altaf’s journals from 1963-73 reveal, he believed in practicing drawing regularly and often berated himself if he slackened in it. He would often choose random subjects to practice the control of his line. This smorgasbord of unrelated figures occupying a single plane points to one such practice session when he would draw and draw to enhance his control over the line. A close examination of the figures reveals various features, emotions and movements that he captures through spontaneous drawing.
