Altaf wore his sympathies for the oppressed on his sleeve and actively worked towards amelioration of the downtrodden through his art. His canvases as well his writings on the subject make it evidently clear that he also harboured a simultaneous scorn for the entitled; a rare quality for someone who himself hailed from a privileged background. This ink and watercolour work reveals how deftly he lampoons the elite—the two large-headed figures are perhaps sahibs of some variety. While one bends to caress a bird, the other is protected against the rain even as he goes about kicking the weak.
