General Herbert Kitchener had barely been one month in India as Commander-in-Chief when the durbar took place. His reputation as the hero of the Anglo-Boer war however preceded him, and he received an enthusiastic reception in Delhi. The Durbar was the calm before a storm of confrontations between Kitchener and Curzon, which would lead to Curzon’s resignation as Viceroy of India in 1905.
