Untitled (A Benares Ghat Scene) L. N. Taskar L. N. Taskar was a leading figure of the Bombay School, blending academic realism with a sharp observation of everyday life in India. Trained at and later teaching in the Sir J. J. School of Art, he worked in oils and watercolours, he is known for his exceptional handling of light and colour. Moving away from mythological subjects, Taskar focused on vivid ‘slice of life’ works portraying ordinary people, local rituals and festive moods with narrative ease and atmospheric nuance. Untitled captures a morning scene on a ghat in Banaras, most likely the Dashashwamedh. Taskar, a Maharashtrian, may have been one of the many pilgrims visiting from Maharashtra, or perhaps staying with family close by. His painting reflects not just his artistic prowess but a personal connection to the place. |
