A Jain Pilgrimage Map of Satrunjaya

Unidentified Artist (Jain Art)

A tirtha, in Jainism is a pilgrimage undertaken by a worshipper to cross the sea of samsara—which is ridden with misery and unending rebirths— to attain liberation from this unending cycle in life. It, therefore, becomes a path to enlightenment. One such tirtha lies in the heart of Gujarat, Palitana—the Shatrunjaya Hill. Here, where faith climbs stone by stone up sacred slopes, is the site where the first Tirthankara, Rishabhnath—also known as Adinath—attained moksha and delivered his very first sermon, setting into motion a spiritual path followed by millions in the subcontinent over the centuries. The landscape of Shatrunjaya is commemorated into a large textile, called the Shatrunjaya Pata, offering more than visual beauty—it is a devotional document.
