D. P. Roy Chowdhury

Devi Prasad Roy Chowdhury (1899–1975) was a pioneering Indian painter and sculptor, celebrated for his contributions to modern Indian art. He is particularly noted for bridging traditional Indian art forms with modernist aesthetics, creating a unique and influential body of work. His oeuvre reflects a profound engagement with social and cultural narratives, making him a key contributor to 20th-century Indian art. Roy Chowdhury served as the principal of the Government College of Fine Arts in Chennai (then Madras), where he played a significant role in modernising art education in India. He mentored a generation of artists and encouraged them to explore diverse artistic expressions.
